It's NaNo Time!

My time is ticking away!

That's how far away we are from the start of NaNo (Kuwait time).  In exactly that time (which I can feel ticking away as I type this) I will be joining thousands of other writers as we race the clock to reach 50,000 words before the month is over.

Doing NaNo is something I've thought about every time a new NaNo comes around.  And I've always decided not to do it. Which is weird for me because I'm so competitive.

But I always figured that there was no way it could be worth doing it.  Crunching out a novel in that amount of time was just going to turn into crap.  It's what I thought.  It's why I didn't do it.

And then I started to think about it.  And I actually crunched some numbers.  50,000 words a month equals about 1,667 words a day.  I write about 1,500 words an hour. So basically, what I was asking of myself for NaNo was to commit to doing another half an hour of work a day to reach that goal.  And to be a bit more focused. To let less things interrupt my writing.

And I could do that.

So I signed up and have outlined a novel.

I'm ready for NaNo, and I can't wait to see what I can get out of myself with a little bit more of a forced routine.

Even if the seconds are slowly ticking away from my free time.

Who else is doing NaNo?  Any first timers?  Why'd you decide to jump in?

  2. It's my first time as well. My problem is that I'm really sporadic with my writing....sometimes I write a couple thousand words when I sit down....sometimes I write fifty words, followed by staring at the screen whilst sipping coffee. I decided to do it so that it can kick my arse into writing regularly and plentifully. Besides, deadlines have always been my friend (even though I hate them). Throughout my schooling, I always have worked best under pressure. My best papers are the ones I cram out all the work for in a few hours the night before.

    1. Totally agree with you about the deadlines. I work best under pressure. I always have and not having any deadlines is what makes writing harder for me. Fingers crossed this helps both of us :)
